When she was 10 years old, she took part in local contests, and then recorded her first album. In 1985 she was signed by Rounder Records. Her first solo album came out in 1987. She was then invited to join Alison Krauss Union Station, the band she currently performs with. Her debut album in a group with this band came out in the year 1989.
